The First Sourcebook on Mediterranean & South Central Asian Research in Mathematics and Science Education
Cyprus, Israel, Turkey, Greece, Iran, Pakistan and Central Asia
A volume in the series: International Sourcebooks in Mathematics and Science Education. Editor(s): Bharath Sriraman, The University of Montana.
The Hellenic and Persian civilizations coincide in the Mediterranean Basin and in some parts of South Central Asia. The last four decades in mathematics education has witnessed remarkable contributions from the likes of Efraim Fischbein (Israel) on the psychology of mathematical intuition, from Cypriots on quantitative paradigms to operationalize fundamental developmental constructs in mathematics education, such as trajectories of problem solving and problem posing, and a resurgence of initiatives aimed at fostering creativity and giftedness through synergistic activities of the Larnaca-Haifa research group. The International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education “finally” held its annual meeting in Ankara, Turkey, acknowledging the remarkable strides made by Turkish mathematics educators in the domain of mathematics curriculum development and other areas such as cognitive development in algebra and geometry (e.g., Argun, Sriraman, Ubuz, 2010). International periodicals have also seen an influx of contributions coming sporadically from regions like Iran and Pakistan.
The third Sourcebook in the International Sourcebooks in Mathematics and Sciences series, follows in the path of the Nordic and Asian sourcebooks, and attempts to present the first coherent historical synthesis of the development of mathematics education in countries like Cyprus, Israel, Turkey, Greece, Iran, among others. The sections of the book also present chapters focused on major contributions to theory, methodology, and large scale projects in the various countries. The book taken as a whole adds an important and missing dimensions to the dominant discourses of the history and the development of mathematics education as a field of research.
