The future of our existence could quite possibly be subject to communication infrastructures that our children are not inventors of nor contributors of today. Yet schools are continually in the foreground when it comes to needing new technologies and utilizing new forms of networking technologies. Our teachers are leaders in addressing this need. The book takes a critical perspective on design issues relevant to the future of children meaningfully arguing and representationally reasoning in thoughtful ways through widespread use of digital communication technologies inside schools.
This book is organized in three parts, the past, present and future of representation and communication. It looks back at the history and evolution of representations and communication as infrastructures within society and mathematics education in particular. It examines the present social, cognitive, and cultural impact of technologies. That is, how new technologies can transform more than change the classroom. Combined with theories of teaching, and activities that exploit the affordances of the technology, the potential is to impact motivation, and offer a contrast to "edutainment"-type technology with technology that will have a profound impact on learning by linking motivation and mathematics through participation. Finally the book takes a futuristic stance based on numerous longitudinal projects such as SimCalc, and offers design principles for implementation of new technologies. In other words producing new products by integrating representation and communication technologies in the classroom, and re-defining who we are as educators, learners and thinkers.
