This volume can be seen as a response to a felt need in the developmental sciences to better understand the developmental processes that connect thought and action to the cultural and relational contexts in which they are embedded. Although it has long been recognized that development is inherently social, and that emotional attachments, language and communication, and dialogue are foundational to growth and change, developmentalists and educational researchers continue to look for theoretical orientations, analytic tools, and methods that permit the exploration of processes that connect individuals to each other, to their social groups and communities, and to their cultures. Indeed, in an era of wide scale immigration, globalization and multiculturalism, the need to understand human development as situated in evolving relational contexts becomes particularly acute.
