Equitas: The Payne Center Journal on Race and Social Justice
Equitas: The Payne Center Journal on Race and Social Justice is a peer-reviewed academic journal published by the Dr. N. Joyce Payne Research Center. Equitas is multidisciplinary in focus and invites scholars researching established, conceptual, methodological, and substantive approaches to issues of race and social justice. Equitas disseminates original articles, essays, and reviews that advance social justice with a particular focus on issues that relate to Black communities and HBCUs. Equitas aims to provide broader understanding of systemic inequality in all its various dimensions. Equitas engages scholars, thought leaders, and interlocutors in agenda-setting discussions addressing: What and how are we promoting justice for a more equitable society? and What role do marginalized communities play in the promotion of social justice?
While the Payne Center defines social justice as the existence of fairness in society, the Equitas welcomes different interpretations of the concept of social justice and the debates, including how societies define social justice globally. Equitas promotes the idea that social justice can be studied as both a theoretical and a practical idea and includes studies of policy in action. Equitas mirrors the Payne Center’s research philosophy asserting those directly impacted by systemic discrimination and injustice are often well suited to propose solutions to eliminate those barriers.
