The Handbook of Research in Middle Level Education is a series of volumes containing articles on important research in middle-level education. Each volume has a specific, topical focus relevant to middle grades education such as curriculum, instruction, teacher preparation, policy, professional development, and young adolescent health and well-being. The volumes are an invaluable source of research that informs and supports middle school practitioners, scholars, and policymakers. The series was founded in 2001 by Vincent A. Anfara, Jr., who served as the series editor for volumes 1–5. Beginning with volume 6, Steven B. Mertens joined Anafa as a series co-editor. After the passing of Anfara in 2013, Steven B. Mertens and Micki M. Caskey became the series co-editors starting with volume 10.
