Call for Chapter Proposals

BOOK DESCRIPTION:
The American University School of Education’s Summer Institute on Education Equity and Justice (SIEEJ) is the home of this book series. The School of Education aims to be locally, nationally, and internationally recognized for making a meaningful impact in the field of education through innovative teaching, research, and service. The mission of the School of Education is to create knowledge and prepare students to transform societies through education. The aim of this series is to include scholarship relating to PreK-16 Academic Excellence; Equity; Antiracism and Social Justice; Diversity and Inclusion; Collaboration; Innovation.

2023 CALL FOR CHAPTERS (INVITATION ONLY):
This year’s conference theme “Eradicating the Stigma: Prioritizing Mental Health in PreK-16 Education” centers on the importance of mental health support across primary and postsecondary settings. Education professionals have recognized the impact of mental health on students' learning and achievement, documenting consistently the ways mental health affects PreK-16 graduation rates, coursework, academic performance, motivation, and emotional stability. Complicating the challenges faced by students are also the demands placed on PreK-16 staff who are hired to support mental health. Often these staff are themselves overly stressed and at risk of burnout. This book will explore an array of symptoms of poor mental health in PreK-16 schools and highlight ways school districts, colleges, and universities are successfully, and unsuccessfully, seeking to promote the emotional health of their student body and staff. We will do so by soliciting chapters from interdisciplinary professionals in education, to both transcend the siloed nature of education, and collaborate on addressing PreK-16 student’s mental health through preventative and responsive approaches. Each chapter will include practical recommendations for mental health practitioners, teachers, higher education faculty, parents, and/or students. Proposals should be made on one single-spaced page, consisting of your name and affiliation, tentative title, and an abstract (200 – 500 words). Please include an additional page with a brief biography (200 – 300 words). All proposals should be sent as a single Word file of two pages to Ian P. Levy (Ian.Levy@manhattan.edu) and Sam Steen (ssteen@gmu.edu) by August 28, 2023.

CHAPTER SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:
Authors of accepted peer reviewed proposals will be notified by September 25, 2023 about the status of their submission and sent chapter guidelines. First draft of full chapters, ranging from 7,000 to 8,000 words in Times New Roman 12, double spaced text, inclusive of title, abstract, manuscript, and references, should be submitted as a Microsoft Word email attachment by January 8, 2024. Manuscripts should conform to 7th edition APA style conventions. See Author Guidelines.
