IAP Style Guide

GENERAL FORMATTING INSTRUCTIONS

When writing the chapter, authors should follow these general guidelines:

Document:

  • Prepare manuscripts using Microsoft Word formatted according to the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 7th Edition.
  • Chapters should average about 6k words with a range of 5k-7.5k words, including references.
  • Create and save all contents of the chapter in one MS-Word document (“Title.docx”).
  • (Page 1) Create a Title page including: Author name, degrees, and full affiliation(s) including city and state, preferred mailing address, email, phone, and fax affiliations as these are to appear in the volume and all promotional material.
  • (Page 2) Create an Abstract page including: the chapter’s abstract and keywords.
  • (Page 3) Create an outline of the chapter’s contents.
  • Leave no comments, tracked changes, highlighting, or hidden text in the final version of the manuscript.
  • Place references, chapter appendices, footnotes, tables, exhibits/boxes/cases, figure captions at the end of the text portion of the chapter. Include a section “Notes to the Publisher," which should include any special information or instructions, etc.

Pages:

  • Format all pages using 1-inch margins.

Permissions:

  • Authors must secure permission to reproduce all copyrighted materials. Send an IAP Permission Form to each publisher ASAP.
  • Carbon copy the Editor in all permission correspondence (i.e., all permission request letters, all responses, etc.) (insert email address of series editor or editor).
  • Send the Editor electronic copies of IAP Permission Forms granting permission to reproduce all copyrighted material. (The author retains the original signed permission forms.)

Text:

  • Use 12-point Times New Roman for all text.
  • Do not justify or apply hyphenation, outlining, or any other formatting.
  • Indent the first line of each paragraph one-half inch using a paragraph indent or tab; do not use the space bar.
  • Double space all text including References (not Tables)
  • Allow lines to wrap naturally; no not use hyphens to break words at the ends of lines.
  • Do not insert a blank line between paragraphs.
  • Set off quotations of 40 words or more from the surrounding text (i.e., extracted); indent one-half inch from the margins. Adjust the margins; do not use spaces or tabs.
  • Use italics for emphasis, not underlining.

Numbers:

When writing the chapter, authors should follow these general guidelines:

  • According to section 4.31e of the Publication Manual (p. 112), numerals are used to represent specific values that signify time, dates, ages, scores and points on a scale, exact sums of money, and numerals as numerals. For instance, one would write 5 days instead of five days. However, there is an exception to this rule: When referring to approximate units of time (e.g., weeks, days, months, and years), use words instead of numerals, as in about five days instead of about 5 days.
